Submitting Work

We generally organize 6 to 8 major exhibitions of photography and related media each year, with additional programming in performance, film and lectures. Much of this work is planned at least 18 - 24 months in advance.

Many of our programs are generated internally - that is, conceptualized and organized by Camerawork’s Program Committee, made up of artists serving on the organization’s Board of Directors and staff. Other exhibitions and programs are organized by guest curators and artists.

how to submit

    Submissions should contain the following:

      • up to twenty jpeg images on a cd-rom (or up to twenty slides) labeled with title, date, medium and size and artist’s name and address
      • a current resume and artist statement
      • a self-addressed stamped envelope (the Committee will not return submissions without an SASE.)

For video-based projects, please send VHS tapes or DVD’s with current resume, artist statement and SASE.

Web-based projects (and portfolios submitted on MAC compatible cd-rom) should contain a current resume, artist statement, and SASE.

Also, for the convenience of the committee, please send high-res color images of your web-based project or cd-rom portfolio.

Because of the number of submissions we receive, the turn around is 3-6 months.

    Please send your submissions to:

      Programming Committee
      SF Camerawork

Out of town artists traveling with a portfolio may drop their portfolio off at the gallery during regular hours, Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. The portfolios can generally be picked up after 48 hours. Due to time and staffing limitations, we cannot meet with or provide critical feedback to artists.

review process

Submissions for exhibition are reviewed by our Programming Committee, a group composed of staff and Board members and exhibiting artists in the community. The Committee meets every three months to review portfolios.

It will usually be three to six months from when work is submitted to when you are notified of a decision. The reasons for this may vary. We only review 10 to 15 submissions at a Committee meeting to ensure that each artist receives thorough consideration. In addition, we may be interested in your work, but find we cannot fit it into the immediate exhibition schedule. In this case we will ask to keep your submissions for possible inclusion in later projects. Submissions will be returned within two to four weeks after the final review.
