MÜTTER MUSEUM PHOTOGRAPHS
Curated by Laura Lindgren
For five weeks this summer, Camerawork will be a center not only for provocative photography, but also for a rare look at the peculiarities of the human body. The images on exhibition include works by some of the world's best-known artists who traveled to the Mütter Museum to photograph its anatomical and pathological treasures.
The Mütter Museum of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia is one of the last medical museums surviving from the nineteenth century. The Mütter houses a renowned collection of natural anatomical specimens and models showing medical curiosities ranging from human horns and foetal abnormalities to conjoined twins and murderers' brains. The specimens were originally used as medical teaching devices, but the museum has developed a new audience, due largely to the interest generated by the museum's once little-known and now coveted photography calendars, art directed and produced for nearly a decade by guest curator Laura Lindgren.
This exhibition features work by such luminaries as Max Aguilera-Hellweg, Mark Kessell, Olivia Parker, Rosamond Purcell, Arne Svenson, William Wegman, and others drawn to photograph the shocking beauty of the museum's unusual specimens. Mütter Museum: Photographs also includes a selection of historical images from the museum's archives, work that underscores the parallel timelines of advances in medical and photographic technologies. This exhibition is organized by CATE.
