DEMOCRACY:
THE LAST CAMPAIGN
San Francisco Camerawork presents DEMOCRACY: THE LAST CAMPAIGN, the culmination of a year-long project by the collaborative artist team Margaret Crane/Jon Winet focusing on the 2000 elections.
Democracy: The Last Campaign, an installation and web project http://dtlc.walkerart.org by the collaborative artist team Crane/Winet, is the final installment
in the artists ongoing exploration of the presidential election
process. The project focuses on the spectacle and phenomenon of
the 2000 presidential elections, and seeks to capture the political
zeitgeist of the moment and the psycho-social dynamics of American
public life at the fin-de-siecle. During the months leading up
to the election, the artists will observe and document political
activity and translate their research into a creative installation
that will incorporate photographic/text works, multi-media elements
and an on-line salon that will function as a forum for a national
discussion of issues. In addition, a range of public programs
are being designed in conjunction with the installation to raise
awareness of election issues and critically contextualize the
election process. Democracy: The Last Campaign will borrow from the visual aesthetics and graphic design of
the contemporary news media and play with unexpected combinations
of photography, graphics, sound and video to produce a startling
report, commentary, fiction and manifesto on the last presidential
campaign of the century.
Over the last fourteen years, the collaboration Margaret Crane/Jon Winet has produced over a hundred projects. Their work revolves around
language and photography, including multi-media installations,
public art projects and sites on the Internet and World Wide Web.
