2000 Auction of Fine Photographic Prints Preview Exhibition:
A Benefit for San Francisco Camerawork
Sponsored by
For those who would like to take the leap from looking at art
on museum walls to seeing it on their own walls, San Francisco Camerawork's annual Auction is the ideal event. The Auction is not just for experienced collectors
(who have long recognized the Auction as one of the richest resources
for premium photographs) but a perfect opportunity for those who
are new to collecting, or just becoming interested in photography,
to buy vintage and contemporary photographs at great prices. Unlike
other forms of art, such as painting and sculpture, photographs
are often more affordable, particularly at Camerawork's popular
Auction, and have great investment value.
But investment isn't the only reason to purchase photographs.
New and established collectors cite captivating subject matter
and the great variety of photographic techniques as some of the
most exciting reasons for collecting photographs. In addition
to traditional black and white photographs, a growing number of
contemporary photographers are rediscovering the potential of
highly desirable 19th century techniques such as palladium/platinum
printing, hand-coloring, albumen prints and photo-etchings which
produce exquisite and richly textured images.
At 1:00 pm on Saturday December 2nd at the Hosfelt Gallery auctioneer Dale Stulz will start the bidding in Cameraworks 2000 Annual Benefit Auction of Fine Photographic
Prints, generously sponsored this year by the online art space eyestorm.com.
All photographs for sale may be previewed at the Hosfelt Gallery, 430 Clementina St., SF.from November 29th
to December 1st, and on the day of the Auction, Saturday, December 2nd, from
11:00 am to 1:00 pm. A special preview reception will be held
Thursday, November 30th, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.
Nationally and regionally known photographers, as well as galleries,
photography dealers and collectors nationwide have contributed
prints for the Auction, which is a benefit for SF Camerawork, now in its twenty-sixth year of critically acclaimed artistic
programming in photography and related technologies. This year's
highlights will include works by noted photographers such as Ansel
Adams, Richard Barnes, David Berg, Ruth Bernhard, Debra Bloomfield,
Mark Citret, Linda Connor, Judy Dater, James Fee, Lee Friedlander,
Michael Kenna, Louise Lawler, Laurie Long, J. John Priola, Aaron
Siskind, Jerry Uelsmann, William Wegman, Marion Post-Wolcott and
many, many others.
Over 200 vintage and contemporary photographs will be offered
up for auction by auctioneer Dale Stulz, formerly of Christie's
and widely recognized as the most experienced and knowledgeable
photography auctioneer in the field.
