(11-18 years old)
1. Voluntarily commits to attend and participate in each Saturday
class.
2. Responsibly cares for the camera assigned to him/her while
participating in First Exposures.
3. Brings his or her camera to class each week.
4. Works with his or her mentor on rotating group duties including:
A) breakfast and lunch preparation and clean up
B) processing film
C) general end of class clean up.
junior mentor
(a First Exposures graduate)
1. Sets up and breaks down the group darkroom.
2. Assists the program director with student and mentor recruitment.
3. Assists with class instruction, setting up class demonstrations,
and administrative work.
mentor
(a photographer, art educator, and youth advocate)
1. Works 1:1 with a student as a mentor and photography tutor.
2. Contacts his or her student at least once a week by phone.
3. Works as a team member with other mentors. Together we share
responsibility for the safety and well being of the students.
4. Attends meetings held before class on the first Saturday of
each month.
5. Attends each mentor training seminar.
6. Assists with driving needs with the appropriate forms on file
at Camerawork.
7. Can lead at least one class or activity each semester.
8. Should not loan anything to his or her student. Gifts are encouraged
when appropriate but should be low-cost. (Hand-made gifts like
photographs are best.)
9. May spend time with his or her student outside organized class
time after three months of classesand after the mentor has personally
met with the student's parents or guardians. The policy for outside
meetings is to meet only in public places and in groups of three
or more First Exposure participants at a time.
supporting mentors
1. Is available to assist as a substitute mentor or help out where needed.
2. Does not need to come every Saturday.
program coordinator
(Camerawork Program/Education Coordinator)
1. Is responsible for recruitment and training of mentors and
students.
2. Assists with fundraising, grant writing, and generates in-kind
donations. 3. Maintains regular contact with the student's service agencies and with the student's families. Maintains regular contact with all mentors.
4. Leads weekly classes and coordinates monthly mentor meetings.
5. Facilitates class field trips and exhibitions.
6. Develops/maintains FX Mentor Handbook and FX archives. 7. Maintains slide library.
8. Monitors and facilitates the needs of students, mentors, and
mentoring pairs. Facilitates outside crisis intervention when
appropriate.
9. Distributes and processes anonymous mentor and student program
evaluations.
10. Is available to mentors and students whenever they need information or advice.
