First Exposures adheres to the following schedule. This schedule
provides a basic structure that helps establish a framework of
order, organization, and security for the students. It is especially
important to begin class on time.
10:30 - 10:45 Breakfast and social time
10:45 - 12:30 AM activities
12:30 - 1:00 Lunch and social time
1:00 - 2:30 PM activities
Field Trips: We take at least one full day (10:30-2:30) field trip to an outdoor
location in the Bay Area each year, visit one college or university,
and go on many local outings throughout each semester. These trips
are our photo safaris. They are a fun opportunity to spend quality
time with your students and shoot pictures.
Exhibitions: At the end of each semester we exhibit our work at a noble and
worthy venue. Both the students and mentors help install the artwork
for display.
Mentor Meetings: Mentors meet before class on the first Saturday of each month
(unless it is a holiday, in which case we would meet on the second
Saturday). We review the monthly syllabus and discuss relevant
issues about the students and the program.
Mentor Training Seminars: Training seminars occur at least once each semester. Guest speakers include childcare and mentoring professionals from Northern California.
Students are asked to make a minimum commitment of attending each Saturday class for one semester. Mentors are asked to make a two-semester commitment. Some have remained involved in the program since its inception.
The Mentors are dedicated photographers and art educators with a commitment
to working with youth in the community.
The Students are formerly homeless, low income and transitional young people
aged 11 - 18. They are recruited from agencies serving the South
of Market and Tenderloin communities. The students all have an
explicit interest in learning photography.
